Do you ever feel that Americans would have more freedom with a smaller military?

17

longhaired freaky person asked:

A smaller military = less temptation for the political elites to build a global empire.
Less Empire = more Democracy.
Less military spending – More money to spend at home.
Less aggression = less threat from terrorism.
Less threat from terrorism = less government surveillance and paranoia.
More freedom.
Sure, Yakrider.

I’d like the freedom to select a government that represented the views of the People.
I’d like the freedom to travel, communicate, and assemble without government spying.
I’d like the freedom to plan for the future without worrying if my job will be outsourced to China or India.
I’d like the freedom to smoke marijuana if I want to.
I’d like the freedom to share music I buy if I want to.
I’d like the freedom to hear different political perspectives on the public airwaves, beyond what 4 multinational corporations think everyone should believe.

And on and on…

“To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.” — George Washington, U.S. President (1789–1797)

Whats to stop any other Nation in the world from raising a larger military, becoming an Empire, acting more agressively and terrorizing the world? Just because America lowers her defenses doesn’t mean other countries would do the same. In fact, just the opposite might happen.

Excellent point. Unfortunately, neo-cons live in dread of their neighbors, and the world around them.

They are sooo afraid of everything that I sometimes feel sad for them.

Perhaps your question could be better answered if you made a list of some of the freedoms that you, personally, have lost or would like to have that you don’t have now. Relate each to the size of the US military. Thanks.

*********** Thanks for the list. You obviously don’t have a clue as to the meaning of freedom. Don’t worry though, the odds are better than even you’ll find out about freedom, and what it really means, by the time you grow up.

A smaller Military and we would all speak German or Japanese

Yes Spain’s small military has saved them from terrorism hasn’t it.

Ever heard of ETA? They have Bombed them 3 times in as many years.

Every been to Europe? where you are on CCTV more than 300 times everyday in some countries. They have more survelance than we do.

I’d like the freedom to select a government that represented the views of the People.

We have that Sorry they dont take a national vote every time they want to do something

I’d like the freedom to travel, communicate, and assemble without government spying.

What are you doing that people are spying on you? By the way the terrorist would like this too.

I’d like the freedom to plan for the future without worrying if my job will be outsourced to China or India.

Wel that is capitalism, Start your own business and refuse to outsource yourself.
I’d like the freedom to smoke marijuana if I want to.

Alot of people would like to smoke ***** and have *** with children, but we have laws against that too

I’d like the freedom to share music I buy if I want to.

So you would like to legally steal and help others steal.

I’d like the freedom to hear different political perspectives on the public airwaves, beyond what 4 multinational corporations think everyone should believe

There are plenty of outlets to hear diffrent views they are just not as big and that is becuase those people’s veiws are not held by many people. Start your own radio station and see how you do.

Down sizing them military will get you none of these things and even if it did you would most likley whine about something else

I see you are just mad because you can’t smoke pot legally. lol
No wonder, don’t you know it causes paranoia?

    No.
BTW, it isn’t the military that is making the freedom restricting laws in this country, it is the libs. People can’t even speak their mind anymore without having the ACLU or CAIR or MOVEON.ORG on their behind.

We had a smaller military prior to being ****** into WWII. If we had a larger military at the time, Japan may have given a second thought to attacking USA at Pearl Harbor. The ***** may have given a second thought to sinking U.S. merchant ships in the Atlantic. NEVER AGAIN should we be caught unprepared.
With a smaller military the USA may be enslaved by Russia or China.

First it’s not a Democracy it’s a Republic….how many people don’t understand that? Second we’re not losing our rights through military action it’s coming through increased legislation. Which in turn is being caused by special interest groups and lawyers distorting the spirit of the laws. Taking and bunching cases together instead of weighting them on individual merits. You want more money to spend at home how about putting politicians on the same social security system the rest of us schmucks get! Look up the sweet deal they get I guarantee it’ll enrage you. Lastly as for agression lets not forget we were attacked first. 9/11 ring any bell? Oh yeah it was the second time the first time the bomb failed to drop the building. I’m not saying we haven’t been there longer than I would like but if we don’t get it done now guess where we’re at again in fifteen years? No thanks I just as soon finish it now!

No. And you point out all the fallacies in liberal foreign policy theories today.

America is not building a global empire. We are trying to establish Iraq as an independent and self sufficient nation. Liberals ignore this because it doesn’t fit into what they want to believe.

Again, no empire. However, a smaller military does mean less Democracy. Japan and Germany would never have become Democracies had it not been for a large US military. Israel, a Democracy, would have been destroyed without a large Israeli military capability.

We spend plenty of money here at home. I suggest you take a look at this year’s budget since you obviously have no clue how little we spend on the military compared to domestic programs. On top of that, spending more money here at home is not a good thing. Welfare? Great job there. Condemn entire generations of families to a life of poverty. Social Security? That worked out well. How about the “bridge to nowhere,” is that more important than defending this country? No.

We are not an aggressive nation. The last war of aggression you could possible point to was the American-Spanish war and that is debatable. WWI, defending the principles of freedom and Democracy against the old world ideas of serfdom and hereditary rule. WWII, liberating Europe and stopping ****** and stopping Japanese imperialism after Japan had attacked us. Korea, defending South Korea. Vietnam, defending South Vietnam. Grenada (if you can call it a war), liberating Americans being held as hostages. Panama (if you can call it a war), defending Democracy in Panama and going after a drug distributor. Kuwait, liberating Kuwait. Iraq, ending the reign of a brutal dictator who we thought still possessed WMDs and giving 58 million Iraqis a shot at a better life. Afghanistan, ending a terrorist regime with links to al’Qaeda. Liberals perpetuate this myth that any US military action not started by another liberal is an example of US imperialism. Its a flat out lie. Its intentional. Its disgusting.

This one you have half right. I’m not paranoid about freedom. I know my rights aren’t being violated because I’m not making overseas calls to terrorists. And if any American was making calls to terrorists, I’d sure as hell want to know about it. Assume there had been another attack on the US and Bush had not implemented the Patriot Act; you liberals would be bashing him for not doing enough to prevent the attack, you’d be crucifying because he didn’t implement the Patriot Act. However I find it interesting that you now legitimize the increased government surveillance as necessary due to the increased threat from terrorism. This tells me you do understand why the Patriot Act is in place and yet you’re willing to sacrifice a few American lives to make your own political point.

And, no. We enjoy the freedoms we have because we have a well trained, well equipped military to defend this nation.

Finally, the evils of this world are not the fault of the United States of America. The greatest hope, the greatest force for good, the greatest source for peace in this world is the greatest nation this planet has ever seen and, God willing, will ever see. That nation is the United States of America.

that’s a great little fantasy you have there but its just that …it’s not reality..if it was we would be a occupied country by Al-kida and we’d be all lined up and if we didn’t except Allah then off with our heads….or have you already lost yours??

Freedom has nothing to do with the size of our military; you are still able to get up in the morning, turn your PC on, surf the Net without restrictions, get on the bus and go to the local supermarket and buy whatever you want, drive whatever car you want, elope with whoever you want, male or female; have as many kids as you want, work in whatever job you want and there are no restrictions in the places you can go and you can pretty much do whatever you heart’s desire.

Your Freedoms are defended by the people you seem to scorn and we don’t b*tch and complain about it… Because you have the right of free expression, which has been paid for in blood.

Ask any of the people that lived through Tiananmen Square in 1989 about their freedom of expression, or the people that lived in East Germany prior to 1989 about freedom.

You have no idea how good you have it living here.

I think some people here have some bad logic. You can’t point to the history of America as justification that an aggressive military is good. We have just started using our military as an aggressive force in the last 30 years. And in the last 5 years, we’ve gotten much much worse. What will be the results, maybe peace but maybe not. This isn’t the same as fighting an invading force, we are the invading force. People died so we could live free may not be true when they are attacking another country. Germans did not become more free for attacking France, Iraq didn’t become more free from attacking Kuwait. Odds are that we may not become more free for attacking Iraq. We don’t alway get to be right just because we’re Americans.
