How much did you pay for an ADT system?

3

blondeandblue asked:

I was given a price quote for an ADT home security system. The price I was quoted was:
$100 per glass break detector
$150 per smoke detector
$75 per door or window contact
$299 for the ‘wireless package’–1 keypad, 1 keyfob, 2 contacts, 1 motion detector
The service would be $35/monthly.

What have others paid for their security systems? Are these prices negotiable? I think they seem fairly high; is there a way to just buy the basic ADT package and add on things like glass break, smoke detector, etc., purchased elsewhere?

Thank you for any help!

Some are negotiable. I pay $35 a month. I did wired glass break for the the windows. The contacts are a little redundant, unless you leave you windows unlocked. Door contacts for the front, back, and patio slider, wireless motion detector for the unattached garage, and 3 smoke and heat detectors. I paid $850 for everything (I have a large home). Here’s the catch: wait for the installer to come out. Mine was a college kid. He gave me 3 key fobs and put in an extra keypad for $40 cash. Talk the talk and you can get some extra things, hopefully.

ADT is a rip off! they use cheap equipment, mark it up too high, then get you trapped in a monitoring contract. Find a nice local company to do your alarm. My company for instance, our monitoring is 24.00 per month and NO CONTRACT. ADT installers get paid by the job and try to squeeze in 3 or 4 installs a day to make a decent paycheck. The local companies are family owned, pay their employees better and specialize in cameras, gates, and commercial fire systems as well which makes them much more educated about your installation. The basic ADT installer usually doesn’t even grasp electronic theory and can give you a really bad installation which will plague you with service calls that YOU pay for throughout the entirety of your contract. beware. And as far as adding on your own devices, unless you know how to program an alarm system, you will need a pro to do it. Programming an alarm system is like creating a program on a computer, lots of numbers that represent things and every alarm system brand has a different program.

If i were you i’d look in to other companies. What many will do is set you up with a certain amount of free equipment for free, and you just pay the monthly monitoring rate. They will then sell your account to a company that actually monitors your system like ADT or Monitronics. These companies usually only sell during the summer and in certain areas, so call around. Some companies that I know of right off include AMP, Pinnacle, and APX. You should be able to get the equivalent of 2 door sensors, a glassbreak and/or smoke detector, along with 1-2 keyfob remotes, and the panel, all for free. ADT will ***** you over if you let them, so don’t. Also yes all those prices are very negotiable. To give you an idea, door/window sensors should sell for about $50. Smoke detector for about $100. The mmr on that is good though. $35 is a very reasonable price for a two way system. Cell primary’s will be closer to $45.
