Honda Civic asked:

Hi there, I have just recoverd my computer (it is my old computer’s, around 3 1/2 years old) and i recentlly have been mad at norton 360 i purchased now i give up on buying protection because i see there are TONS of protection for free. So insted of wasting 79.99 every year ill rather save that amount of money and spend it on my collage funds. So, To start off i need a good strong firewall that is free, i know the yahoo community knows tons. I also want to know good a good antivirus , at the moment i have Avast! installed it seems fine but not sure if its stronger then those AVG or Avira!. My third thing is a good anti spyware. i have none but i have windows deffender (came installed with my computer) i dont think its to secure since microsoft secruity is not the best they offer, so i think there are better ones out there that offer more and are for free. And also addtional programs that will help me stay secure throughout the internet. This computer is mainlly used to schoolwork and a bit of games (i only play halo combat evolved on this one). If you need to know my computer specs here they are :
2 GB of ram
1.80 GHZ cpu speed
500 GB of hard drive space (there is one hard drive of this space, Hard drive C)
80 GB of hard drive space (this is only one hard drive, Hard drive D)
Windows XP home edtion SP3
I also use Mozzila Firefox.
Lastelly, this is a desktop computer.

So, now can you guys tell me good tips and programs that will help me stay secure please? And also that it is totally free because i dont want to spend another penny for nothing again.

-Thanks!

My choice to you is get Avast! 4 home edition. It has anti-rootkit, Antivirus, Antipyware/malware and is completely free. It doesnt slow down your computer and updates virus definitions automatically. It also does boot time scans. This is one of the best antiviruses in the world. Here is the download link:

Well the best firewall is COMODO, but it’s complicated to use. If you take the time to learn it however, nothing on the internet or a hacker will get to you. It’s a pain to use at times so that’s up to you.

As for virus protection, I swear by Spybot Search and Destroy (Especially their teatime registry protection)

Again both programs are free and can be found at downloads.com. They are kind of complicated to use but if you learn how to use them, they are invaluable tools.

    OnlineArmor free firewall (quite user-friendly):
    See why:

    Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware:
    SuperAntiSpyware:

Stick with Avast. AntiVir has no spyware protection, AVG has no rootkit protection and causes problems:
AVG slaps Trojan label on core Windows file
    AVG tags ZoneAlarm as Trojan
AVG slaps Trojan label on Adobe Flash
    AVG update kills XP:

I have AVAST as you mentioned and it does a good job. In addition I have CCleaner, use to be known as Crap Cleaner…..go to and check it out. I run it every time I power down to get everything that may have camped onto of my PC………….FREE

You can protect a PC very effectively for free, you should always install a firewall and have anti-virus software installed and running before browsing the net, its also a good idea to scan the PC with additional anti-spyware software such as Malwarebytes once a week, all the security software you need is available completely free, these are often better then the paid for software such as Mcafee, below are links to excellent free software, download and use all 5 to fully protect your PC.

    Avast Home Edition: (anti-virus)

    Comodo Pro: (firewall)

    Malwarebytes: (anti-spyware)

Mozilla Firefox: (browser, safer alternative to IE)

    WOT (web of trust) Add-On:

Install the WOT add-on it is a free internet security add-on for your browser. It will keep you safe from online scams, identity theft, spyware, spam, viruses and unreliable shopping sites. WOT warns you before you interact with a risky website.

NOTE: Avast works for 60 days from installation after which you will need to register to get your free product key which is valid for a year after which you get another free key, so it always free.

If you have AVAST and WINDOWS DEFENDER on your computer you don’t need anything else….adding anymore security software could start causing a conflict…I have avast and Windows defender on my computer and they both work fine and have both stopped multiple internet, worm, and trojan attacks….and malware/adware attacks also I am a big Science Fiction fan and those sites are loaded with viruses…i just say bring em on !
